Service

Ductless in old rooms

A slim indoor unit and a small line set, for the rooms the route can't reach.

Ductless units need a hole about the size of a saucer for their line set, not a duct. That makes them the answer for a rear addition, a finished attic or one room that stays hot, and a good partner to a hidden-duct system on the other floors.

Signs

When it's time to look at this.

  • One room is the problem

A top-floor bedroom or a rear kitchen that no other cooling reaches.

  • An addition with no ducts

A rear extension was often built on its own.

  • A finished attic

Roof heat makes it the hottest room in the house.

  • Window units you want gone

A window unit blocks light and the view.

  • Heat as well as cooling

Many ductless units are heat pumps that also warm the room.

  • A room with the plaster you love

A small line set is a smaller hole than a duct.

The visit

What happens at the survey.

  1. 01

Step 1: We look at the room

Size, sun, ceiling height and what is on the other side of the wall.

  2. 02

Step 2: We choose the spot

Indoor unit and outdoor unit, placed to keep the line set short and out of sight.

  3. 03

Step 3: We plan the line set

Where it goes through the wall, and how it is covered.

  4. 04

Step 4: We write the plan

Equipment by model, line-set route, electrical and permits.

  5. 05

    Step 5: You decide

You keep the plan and nothing starts until you say so.

Cost

What drives the cost.

We don't print prices here. These are the things that move the number, and the written plan prices each one.

  • Number of rooms

Each room is a unit, and units can share an outdoor unit.

  • Line-set length

Shorter runs cost less and look better.

  • Where the outdoor unit goes

A rear wall bracket, a roof or a yard, and any review that applies.

  • Electrical

A circuit for the outdoor unit, and panel work if needed.

  • Condensate

Where the water drains, planned so it doesn't stain brick or stone.

  • Permits

Mechanical permits, and drawings if the property is designated.

Questions

Questions about this work.

Does it cool the whole house?

A ductless unit cools its room. Several units, or a hidden-duct system, cool more of the house.

Can it heat?

Many are heat pumps. Ask us which model the plan names and what it does in cold weather.

What does the hole look like?

A small round hole through the wall, with the line set covered in a neat channel.
